Loneliness Plays a Significant Role in Alzheimer's

Studies on Alzheimer's have determined loneliness as playing a crucial role of the disease. Understanding this earlier on and creating a preventative environment may delay the development in those prone to Alzheimer's.

Social Environment: The environment of those living with cognitive decline, such as Dementia or Alzheimer's, can heavily contribute to the rate at which they are affected. Loneliness and social isolation are leading causes to a faster rate of cognitive decline, as they are likely to cause depression and anxiety. To combat this, it is important to ensure the person is comfortable and involved in their community. Living in a Dementia-friendly community, participating in socialization and activities, and communicating with neighbors will reduce feelings of loneliness.

Demographics of Alzheimer's: Alzheimer's is found to affect women at an accelerated rate due to long-term exposure to chronic stress, leading to the feeling of loneliness earlier in life. The lack of social and emotional support felt by women increases the risk of developing dementia as they directly contribute to depression and anxiety. It is important to invoke methods to prevent and manage women's loneliness to reduce cognitive decline.

Prediction of Alzheimer's: There are often indicators of Alzheimer's in previous clinical notes and medical records before the actual diagnosis is given. Watching for terms such as depression, concentration difficulties, forgetfulness, etc., may lead to an earlier diagnosis and provide time for more preventative strategies.

Make sure to look out for early signs of Alzheimer's so you and your loved one have more time to plan, access support, and put compassionate care in place that can slow decline and protect quality of life.
